I've always made mix tapes back when I was younger and tape decks were still THE shit. Now, we're in the days of CDs and mediafire. Still, we're able to make mix tapes.
A mix tape is a form of expression, in my opinion. It's not just a bunch of random songs. No. It's a theme of sorts. You have to go through songs that mean something to you and the feelings you're trying to convey. It takes time. Not to mention putting the songs in a certain order.
